4 TIPS YOU CAN IMPLEMENT DURING NATIONAL SAFETY MONTH

National Safety Month Tips

Back in 1996, the National Safety Council (NSC) designated June as National Safety Month with the goal of increasing public awareness on the leading safety and health risks that occur during the summertime.

At Morris & Dewett Injury Lawyers, we want to do our part in helping you and your family have a safe summer. Here are five tips you can implement at home, outside, or wherever you may be.

Recreational Water Safety

Going for a swim is the perfect way to get some relief from the summer heat, but remember that unintentional drownings are the leading cause of death for young children. Whether you are swimming in a pool, a lake, the ocean, or another body of water, always ensure that children are supervised, even if they know how to swim. Keep rescue equipment nearby and ensure that at least one adult present knows CPR. Lastly, remember that swimming and alcohol don’t mix!

Bicycle Riding

Bicycle riding is a popular activity, especially when the warm weather hits. With more car accidents taking place during summer, there is also an increased risk of being hit by a car on your bike. Always ensure that you and your children wear bicycle helmets to prevent serious or fatal head injuries in the event of a bicycle crash or fall.

Beat the Heat

Anyone can be at risk of developing serious heat-related illnesses, so it’s important to take precautions when outside. Always moderate your time spent in the sun, especially during hours when ultraviolet (UV) rays are the strongest; typically, this occurs between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Make sure to stay hydrated, use sunscreen before and throughout the day, and wear sunglasses to protect your eyes.

Beware of Bugs

Along with the summer fun comes pesky mosquitoes, which can carry dangers of Zika virus, West Nile virus, and other mosquito-borne illnesses. Ticks also come out more frequently during summer, and these bugs can carry Lyme Disease. Make sure that you and your children wear insect repellent before going outside. Avoid areas where these bugs congregate, such as tall grass and still water. Homeowners should remove weeds and mow their lawns regularly.
