Four Common Types of Construction Accidents

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has a “Fatal Four” list of the most dangerous types of construction accidents. Our firm can handle all sorts of construction accident claims, but we have a focus on these four due to their severity. We can assist clients who have been seriously injured, and those who have lost a loved one in a fatal construction accident.

The OSHA “Fatal Four” of construction accidents are:

Falls from heights
Falling from a height on a construction site is one of the most common types of construction accidents, especially on sites with several stories. Scaffolding collapses are also a form of accident that is sorted into this accident category.
Struck-by objects
Falling objects are extremely dangerous on construction sites. Hardhats can protect a worker from small falling objects, but larger tools and debris can cause fatal injuries if an unsuspecting worker below is hit.
Caught-in/between accidents
When a worker is caught inside a piece of machinery or between one object and another, it is a caught-in/between accident. Construction vehicles like tractors and bulldozers are sometimes the cause of these types of dangerous accidents.
Electrocutions
Workers who are working on electrical sources can be severely injured in an accident. Electrocution can also be suffered by workers adjacent to the electrical worker, but who were not given the opportunity to clear the area safely.

Compensation Opportunities After a Construction Accident

You might have two options to seek compensation after a construction accident:
  • Workers’ compensation
If you are an employee of a construction company that operates out of Alexandria or the surrounding area, then you could be covered by workers’ compensation insurance. Workers’ comp allows you to gain financial benefits without the need of naming a liable party and pursuing a civil claim. If it is an option, then it is the first one you should explore.
  • Personal injury claim
If you are not an employee but an independent contractor instead, then you probably aren’t covered by workers’ comp. In that situation, you will still have the right to file a personal injury claim against the party that caused your construction accident. The trouble is that you will have to use evidence to prove that you weren’t liable for your injuries.

In some cases,

you can get compensation through both avenues. For example, a worker who has workers’ compensation but was hurt by a third party on the construction site might be able to get workers’ comp while filing a claim, too. You cannot receive more damage than you are owed by using both claim types, though.
