Top 6 Locations of Car Accidents

Auto wrecks can occur whenever and wherever the roads, drivers, and/or vehicles are unsafe. Generally, however, most car accidents take place in busier locations where traffic conditions are more complex — or where motorists are more comfortable and less careless behind the wheel.

Specifically, the top 6 locations for car accidents in Louisiana and Texas are:

  • 1
    Highways & interstates
  • 2
    Rural roads
  • 3
    City streets
  • 4
    Intersections
  • 5
    Parking lots & garages
  • 6
    Roads close to home
Here is a closer look at each car crash location, along with its risks and more (click on a link above to jump directly to any section).
Highways & Interstates

Highways and interstates are typically multi-lane roadways that have posted speed limits of at least 55 miles per hour (mph). While highways and interstates are vital transportation routes, they can also be incredibly risky roads.

In fact, with on-ramps, off-ramps, merges, and rapidly changing traffic conditions, highways and interstates are often the sites of auto wrecks, especially when drivers are:

  • Speeding
  • Distracted or inattentive
  • Not complying with standard traffic laws

When car accidents occur on highways and interstates, they tend to involve multiple vehicles and catastrophic injuries. These wrecks can also give rise to chain-reaction crashes, as well as guardrail accidents, rollovers, and serious 18-wheeler wrecks.

Rural Roads

Although rural roads generally see less traffic than urban roads, rural streets are the sites are far more deadly wrecks. In fact, about 54% of traffic deaths occur on rural roads (source: NCSL). That gives rural roads a fatal crash rate that’s about 2.4 times greater than the fatality rate for urban roads.

The top three reasons that more car accidents happen on rural roads, rather than urban ones, are:

  1. Speeding
  2. Alcohol use
  3. Failures to buckle up

Additionally, it’s critical to point out that (source: NHTSA):

  • Fatal rollovers are far more likely to occur on rural roads.
  • Rural roads tend to lack sufficient lighting, and nearly half of all deadly rural accidents occur at nighttime.
City Streets

Since 2008, fatal car accidents on urban roads have surged by more than 17% (source: NHTSA). Notably, when comparing the auto crashes in urban areas versus rural areas, urban crashes are far more likely to involve:

  • Victims outside of vehicles: Pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists are far more likely to be hit on urban roads, rather than rural ones.
  • Drunk drivers: While deadly drunk driving wrecks have declined on rural roads, dropping by about 25% since 2008, these crashes have increased by 13% on urban roads over the same period (source: NHTSA).
Intersections

About 1 in every 3 deadly auto accidents occurs at an intersection (source: FHWA). While most of these crashes happen at intersections with traffic signals, a good portion also occur at intersections with traffic signs only.

When car wrecks happen in intersections, they tend to involve:

Parking Lot & Parking Garages

About 1 in 4 traffic accidents occurs in a parking lot or a parking garage (source: CBS). In most cases, these crashes are caused by distracted drivers. In fact, data shows that driver distraction in parking lots varies by age, with:

  • Personal grooming being the number one distraction for teen drivers in parking lots
  • Cellphones being the leading distraction for other motorists in parking lots

Although parking lot and parking garage car accidents can occur at any time, they’re most likely to take place during the holidays when more people are out and about shopping (source: NSC).

Additionally, parking lot crashes are more likely than other types of auto collisions to involve pedestrian victims — particularly children, the elderly, and the disabled, all of whom can be more difficult for motorists to see and avoid.

Roads Close to Home

More than 3 in every 4 auto crashes happen within 10 miles of motorists’ homes (source: NCBI). This close-to-home crash effect tends to:

  • Impact both male and female motorists
  • Not be a phenomenon for newer drivers
  • Result from motorist complacency and familiarity with the roads they travel most often
  • Involve children, the elderly, pedestrians, and bicyclists as victims
Other Locations of Car Accidents

Beyond the top car crash locations discussed above, other areas where auto crashes commonly occur include (and are not limited to):

  • Driveways
  • Non-intersection junctions and merges
  • On-ramps and off-ramps
  • Railroad crossings
  • Undivided 2-lane roads
  • Highway work zones
  • Wherever traffic flow interruptions occur
