Reelin for the Kids
May 2024
The Reeling for Kids Saltwater Challenge was founded in 2003 by Doug Johnson and several volunteers, in conjunction with the Boys & Girls Club of Alachua County.
Doug grew up in the Northwest Boys and Girls Club in Gainesville beginning at age 5 and continuing through age 13. The Club played a vital role in developing social, academic and athletic skills for Doug and many other kids in Alachua County. Doug would later use these skills to obtain a scholarship to the University of Florida and play quarterback for the Florida Gators. He was then drafted out of high school in the second round and played third base for the Tampa Bay Rays. Doug would later move on to the NFL, playing for a combined seven years with the Atlanta Falcons, Tennessee Titans, Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals. As an NFL player, Doug started this tournament to give back to his “Club” and to help young kids in Alachua County receive the benefits and help he received as a kid

choctaw-apache powwow
April 2024
On the last weekend of April, the Choctaw-Apache Tribe, located on the banks of Toledo Bend at the Community of Ebarb, hosts a traditional Powwow. The Choctaw-Apache Tribal Powwow celebrates the 2,500-plus member tribe’s roots.
The Tribe is essentially 21 families strong, and according to tribal records, 13 of the tribe’s families were associated with the mission and presidio of Los Adaes. After being forced by the Spanish crown to move from Los Adaes to San Antonio in 1778, the families made their way back as close as east Texas and resettled the abandoned mission at Nacogdoches. It was only a matter of time before those families and eight others resettled their ancestral lands on the east side of the Sabine River in what was to become Sabine Parish between 1835 and 1870.
The Choctaw Apache Powwow is a celebration of Native American Culture; enjoy traditional dancing, unique craft items, jewelry, and Indian Fellowship.
